Lehrer: Lake maintenance -- protecting people, equipment in Sun City

hile construction of the Lakes East/West Golf Course, 10433 W. Talisman Road, maintenance building continues on schedule, employees deserve a round of applause as they have continued to keep the course in good playing condition, in spite of all the work going on at this location.

Though there was much discussion about the cost of what many referred to as an “equipment shed,” this structure will be so much more. While it appears to be very large, it is precisely what is needed to protect the substantial investment we have in maintenance equipment and so that Recreation Centers of Sun City can provide staff with a safe and comfortable working environment.

Golf maintenance equipment is extremely costly. Our United States Golf Association consultant Brian Whitlark explained that the average 18-hole golf course has approximately $1 million in golf maintenance equipment. We are fortunate to have the ability to use the same equipment for two 18-hole golf courses, but it is critical that we maintain our equipment. Getting expensive equipment out of the Arizona sun is a big step in the right direction. However, maintaining this equipment takes more than just a good parking spot. Having the tools, hydraulics and space to work on our equipment will not only promote the life of this equipment but will also produce a better product for our golfers.

This new structure will provide both the storage space necessary but also proper working space. Equipment will be securely stored and protected not only from the weather but potential vandalism as well. Staff will have amenities that meet proper standards, including basics, such as restroom facilities and a clean break area.

Perhaps an open house once construction is complete might help members/cardholders to understand and appreciate that this is not a storage shed; it is housing very expensive equipment required to maintain these golf courses so that they continue to meet the community’s desires and expectations.

Stay tuned for more information.
