Jenson: MOWW promotes patriotism, leadership in Sun City area

What does a Military Order of World Wars chapter do?

Well, the West Valley MOWW Chapter 131 formally meets eight times per year October-May, but it also meets on other matters beyond these eight months. Are we busy? Yes, Chapter 131, as well as other Arizona MOWW chapters are.

We come together to support sponsoring and organizing a summer session for 60–65 deserving high school students that have been selected to attend a 3-day session referred to as AZ Youth Leadership Conference that convenes in July in the Phoenix area. While attending the AZYLC, Reserve Officer Training Corps students are taught the American Constitution, as well as many of our founding fathers’ writings, as we prepare today’s students to enter adulthood and become America’s future leaders.

The recent presence of COVID-19, as well as federal/state/local guidelines shut down the AZYLC program last summer. We are pleased to announce that the AZYLC will be offered this year.

We just recently initiated a unique program within West Valley Chapter 131 that offers students the opportunity to compete for financial rewards, while expressing themselves in a 400-word essay. This year’s subject was centered around “What Patriotism Means to Me?” Their essays were fairly and separately judged by five of our members. Each year the subject of the essay will be changed for competing students to consider.
