Iyengar yoga now available in West Valley

Those wanting to increase their flexibility, strength and skill level can participate in Iyengar yoga, currently taught through the Zoom platform but returning to the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, 19803 N. R.H. Johnson Blvd., when it is safe to do so.

Iyengar yoga is hatha yoga as taught by Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar. Classes are sequenced to promote health and skill in the body and stability in the mind. Doing yoga the Iyengar way means emphasis is placed on alignment of the body, mind and breath. Iyengar yoga is known for asana (poses) though the practice also incorporates the breath and the mind throughout each class. Yoga poses are specifically designed to extend the muscular structure of the body in a safe and gentle manner. Through these extensions and “holding” of poses, students increase their core strength and flexibility.

Specific instructions are given to help prevent injuries that can occur from daily activities as Iyengar yoga works to strengthen encourage weak parts as well as getting stiff areas to release.

Teacher Bonita Smulski-Bizeau has more than two decades of yoga experience and more than six years of certified Iyengar teaching experience. She works to increase her yoga strength, flexibility and knowledge through a daily yoga practice as well as continuing yoga education through classes with a senior-level Iyengar teacher twice a week (through Zoom). She has been a resident of Sun City West for the last nine years and beyond her passion for yoga, she enjoys walking and bike riding.

All that is need for class is a yoga mat, yoga blankets, yoga blocks, folding chair and a strap. Registration for eight classes is $50 through the SCW EXPLORE! Program at suncitywest.recsolutions.com.
