Women voters to kick off year

League of Women Voters members and their guests will get a glimpse into county government when Clint Hickman joins them for a chat.

The League of Women Voters-Northwest Maricopa County will present “A Chat with Supervisor Clint Hickman” during their regular meeting 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 17540 N. Avenue of the Arts, Surprise. Following the program opening, a noon brown bag lunch and social period will be available.

Maricopa County is governed by five elected district supervisors. The Board of Supervisors appoints a county manager. The board sets the agenda and approves a budget that allocates money to all departments and elected offices.

As one of the five Maricopa County supervisors, Mr. Hickman is responsible for District 4, which encompasses the Northwest Valley. He will explain the nuts and bolts of local governance where decisions are made that affect residents’ lives in countless ways. He will explain how people can be informed, be heard and get things done. He also will answer attendees’ questions.

Mr. Hickman, a fourth generation Arizonan, was appointed to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors March 21, 2013. He was reelected in 2016 for a four-year term. District 4 voters demanded strong fiscal stewardship and passed the torch on to Mr. Hickman.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League also welcomes men as members.

Editor’s Note: Ms. Rose is League of Women Voters Northwest Valley chapter public relations chairwoman.
