Posted
Harland Larry Hale died on July 27 at his home in Sun City, Ariz., surrounded by his loving family while under the care of hospice. Born on June 4,1933, in Mobridge, S.D., to Raymond Marler Hale and Emma Louise Gullickson Hale, Larry grew up in the mining town of Butte Montana. A standout basketball player, he earned an athletic scholarship to Montana State, where he studied history and industrial education. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War, completing basic training in Fort Ord, Calif., near Monterey. Larry returned to college and got married, earning his teaching credential before teaching history in Hilmar, Calif. Larry’s children Julie and Michael were born in nearby Turlock. The family moved to Salinas, where Larry taught at El Sausal Jr. High before teaching metal shop, coaching track and serving as a counselor for the Regional Occupation Program at Alisal High School. Divorced but retaining custody of his children, Larry earned a Masters in education from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He met and married the love of his life, Rosemary “Posy” Ross, an operating room nurse and a single mother of a son (Jon). The complete family formed with the arrival of Susan Elizabeth Hale (Lane). In 1972 they moved to the countryside in Salinas, Calif., and Larry built a 4-bedroom home. The family attended St Ansgar’s Lutheran Church until 2000, when Larry and Posy moved to Sun City to enjoy retirement. Larry enjoyed world travel, family outings, cribbage, camping, barbecues, golf, scuba diving, rafting, fishing, sports and Bible study. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, brother David Hale, sister Darlene Hale (Mahagin), and his grandson Hale. He is survived by his sister Margaret Hale of Dallas, Texas; four children: Julie Campilli (Vaughn Campilli) of Gilroy, Calif.; Michael Hale (Melissa Snyder) of Oviedo, Spain; Jon Hale (Vanessa Castiglia) of Idaho Falls, Idaho., and Susan Lane (Jim Lane) of Menifee, Calif.; along with 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren (with one more on the way). A service will take place Saturday, Aug. 31, at 1:30 p.m., at Life Church in Peoria, Ariz., 8765 W. Kelton Lane, Peoria, Ariz. He is memorialized further on www.legacy.com.
