Going postal in Youngtown

Service partially restored; return planned

Area residents now have some postal service in Youngtown again.

The Youngtown Post Office closed in September due to poor conditions in the space Postal officials were leasing at 11129 W. Arizona Ave. But Town of Youngtown officials provided space for a mobile postal unit for retail purchases. That unit opened Dec. 9.

“There was a lot of asbestos and mold in that building and it needed to be re-mediated, “ said Mike LeVault, Youngtown mayor.

He added postal customers that had post office boxes at the Youngtown facility now can access them at the small facility on the northwest corner of Grand Avenue and Dysart Road in Surprise.

The Postal Service set up a mobile retail unit at the Youngtown Town Hall campus, 12030 N. Clubhouse Square, for customer convenience during the holiday season, according to Rod Spurgeon, U.S. Postal Service spokesman. The unit is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

“We will keep the mobile unit open past the holidays, but we don’t know yet for how long,” he aid.

He added customers can avoid a trip to the post office or mobile unit for shipping packages by using Click-N-Ship on usps.com.

A post office will return to Youngtown, but Postal officials are not certain when that will happen. They plan to return to the original location on Arizona Avenue.

“We want to keep our presence in Youngtown; we won’t leave customers there high and dry,” Mr. Spurgeon said. “We are waiting for repairs to be made to the building by the owner.”
