Ghost writer offers memoir workshop at Healing Project

Local author and ghost writer Nancy Tsuchiya will teach “Telling Tales: Memoir Writing,” for those of all experience levels, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 20 and 27. The two-part series is presented by Doing Grief Community Healing Project, located at the Interfaith Chapel of Healing at The Church of the Palms, 14808 N. Boswell Blvd.

Tsuchiya has ghost written more than 20 biographies and taught memoir writing to thousands of students for more than 30 years, including students at the Sun City library, area community colleges and the Genealogical Society. She is author of “Telling Tales: A Memoir Guidebook” (available on Amazon.com) and “Telling Tales II: Memoir Guidebook, Considerations and Encouragements.”

“Memoir writing is not about writing or the importance of correct grammar. It is about memories–how to bring them forward and how to faithfully record them,” said Tsuchiya. “Writing allows us to slow our minds and integrate feelings, thoughts, and ideas, it allows us to bring the wisdom of our experiences into the future.”

Tsuchiya comes from a family of storytellers. Her lifelong passion is listening to stories and preserving them.

“I’m concerned that a lot of wisdom is being lost between generations,” Tsuchiya explained. “We don’t have time today for rich sharing of remembrances. The love, courage, insights and experience of our elders are in danger of being lost.”

After suffering her own recent losses, Tsuchiya became involved in Doing Grief Community Healing Project. a developing initiative in Sun City that provides grief support and education, spiritual enrichment opportunities, and healing through the arts programs–including drawing, painting, drumming and writing, among others.

“When I was invited to teach memoir writing at the Healing Project, it was timely,” added Tsuchiya. “I’m thrilled to contribute.”
