Feiste: The U.S. Senate must end the filibuster

Posted

I am deeply concerned with the reluctance to change or get rid of the filibuster, especially in relation to voting rights.

I have to admit, I can’t figure out why Sen. Sinema is against it because she has not really said anything other than “no.”

Given the enormous impact to this country if we don’t pass the voting rights bills, I don’t feel that is an acceptable response.

I have heard that there is concern about selectively doing away with the filibuster or doing away with it for good. Mostly because there is fear of what the Republicans might do in the future. It is my opinion we can not live in the “what if.” We need to do what is necessary so we can get back to free and fair elections.

Given the laws that have been passed in Arizona, we are dangerously close to never having free and fair elections in the future. It is up to Sen. Sinema and Sen. Kelly to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Nothing is ever black and white — there is an answer, but with the Republicans following Trump, and being determined to stop all legislation, I believe they will continue to play dirty no matter what we do.

It is time for Democrats and Independents to put their foot down and put a stop to that behavior. We thought we were making progress by voting for both of our current senators — it appears that is questionable.

We need both of our senators to take the steps necessary to stop the destruction of our democracy and make the government work for the people and not corporations and authoritarians.

I would like to see this planet be livable for my grandchildren.
