Estrella Daughters honor Vietnam veterans

March 29 is the official Vietnam Veterans Day, but Estrella Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, observed the date early by inviting Vietnam veterans to the chapter’s March 9 meeting.
Regent Nancy Nixon greeted each of the 20 veterans and thanked them, saying “on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your service and sacrifice.” Seventeen veterans were presented with certificates of appreciation for their service and lapel pins that are embossed on the back of the pin, closest to the heart, with “A grateful nation thanks and honors you.” The other three veterans (one, Carolyn Meade, is a chapter member) had been previously awarded the lapel pin and certificate.
Estrella Chapter is a commemorative partner with the United States Vietnam War commemoration that was authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense and launched by President Obama in 2012. The signing of the initial proclamation marked the 50th anniversary of the departure of the last American troops from Vietnam — March 29, 1973. The commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War commenced May 28, 2012, and extends through Nov. 11, 2025. Presidents Trump and Biden each issued a proclamation of confirmation. Additionally, the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 was signed into law by President Trump, designating every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.
There was a pizza party following the award ceremony for the veterans, their families, chapter members and guests.
Daughters of the American Revolution Society was founded in 1890 with the mission of promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism and these timeless, overarching principles keep the DAR and its chapters strong and vitally relevant in this ever-changing world. Women descendants of persons who served or aided the cause of the Revolution are eligible to join.
