Dorothy Jane Vandas, better known as “DJ”, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2025, just shy of her 100th birthday.
DJ was the seventh child of Lillian and Ray Alger. She graduated from Geneseo High School, New York, in 1943. She went on to work for many years as a secretary for Northrop Grumman. DJ once said she considered herself privileged to have been married to both Joe Horton and Charles “Chuck” Vandas.
Throughout her life, DJ was an active and devoted member of her church.
During her retirement, DJ dedicated herself to volunteer work in the Sun City West community. In 1995, she was honored as 'Volunteer of the Year' by the local Alzheimer’s support group. She was also proud to be the first female president of the Sun City West Community Fund. Her leadership extended to many other roles, including a term as president of the Sun City West Prides.
DJ was a woman of many joys. She loved spending time with her family, bowling in local leagues and tournaments, and knitting her beloved—and widely gifted—dishcloths. DJ often said she hoped to be remembered as “a good friend.”
She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Charles W. Vandas, and is survived by members of the Alger, McGill, Vandas, Horton, and Morizono families.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the El Dorado of Sun City on Monday, June 16, 2025 from 10am-11am.
