Desert Aires ‘barbershoppers’ to present ‘Musical Memories’

Barbershop choruses perform harmonies March 1 in Sun City

Posted

The Desert Aires Barbershop Chorus will present its show “Musical Memories” 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1 at the Sundial Auditorium, 14801 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City.

This year’s production features the award winning quartet the Velvet Frogs from California as well as the Stomperz Dixieland Jazz Band.

The Desert Aires has been singing this a cappella four-part harmony music in the Northwest Valley for more than 40 years, and competes in the Far Western District of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America doing business as the Barbershop Harmony Society with international offices in Nashville.

The chorus is composed of mostly retirees from 23 different states, and sings this music in other choruses as well. They have been the Arizona A-Plateau Champions multiple times.

Barbershopping has a history going back to 1938, when there were 26 men who gathered on a Tulsa, Oklahoma, hotel rooftop to sing and develop an organization for their kind of music, a Desert Aires news release states. Today the genre is international, with competition taking place every year in the U.S. for those from other countries as well with participating American choruses.
