DeLano: Your vote still matters in Sun City

Posted

Well, here we are once again. Election time in Sun City. While many picked up candidate packets in earnest months ago, the sad truth is that only three members completed the process and only those three names will appear on the ballot.
While this may be disappointing and reminiscent of Recreation Centers of Sun City elections years back, the past several years have benefitted from having numerous candidates vying for vacancies. Though voter turnout has continued to be lackluster over this same period, we were offered alternatives and varying viewpoints based upon each candidates’ life experiences, professional background and goals.
However, just because there are a minimal number of candidates running does not mean that your participation in these elections should be over just yet. According to RCSC bylaws, candidates who receive less than 100 votes are not eligible to fill any of the existing vacancies. If you feel that any of the candidates are not worthy of your vote or up to the task of being a board director, remember that you may vote for up to three candidates; you do not have to vote for anyone you do not feel is qualified.
The only true way to accomplish assessing the candidates and their credentials is by meeting them and hearing what they have to say on the issues. You’ll have many opportunities between now and election day — Tuesday, Dec. 10 — to find out what matters to them, how they view their role on the board and, ultimately, the future of Sun City.
All candidates are invited to attend upcoming board meetings to be introduced to those in the audience. We will also be hosting two candidate forums — one 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at Fairway Recreation Center, 10600 W. Peoria Ave.; the other 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 at Marinette Recreation Cemnter, 9860 W. Union Hills Drive. Light refreshments will be served beginning 30-minutes prior to start time so you’ll have a chance to speak with the candidates one-on-one beforehand. Both of these forums will be video recorded and posted on the RCSC YouTube channel for your review if you’re not able to attend.
You’ll have one last chance to perhaps get better acquainted with the candidates at the annual Sun City Arts and Crafts Festival Friday-Saturday, Nov. 29-30 at Sundial Recreation Center, 14801 N. 103rd Ave.
Whether you’re signed up for the RCSC web portal so you can vote online — starting Monday, Nov. 11 — intend to request an absentee ballot or would rather make your way to the sole polling location Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Lakeview Recreation Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Blvd., just remember to vote.
How our great community proceeds into the future is up to you — and in the hands of those who we elect to serve on the RCSC Board of Directors.
Editor’s Note: Jerry DeLano is RCSC board president for 2019.
