Tom Butler, Sun City West, celebrated his 100th birthday Oct. 9 at Briarwood Country Club with his friends and family.

Butler was born at Niagra Falls, New York. He attended the University of Michigan and holds a degree in physics and a PhD in electrical engineering.

The day after Pearl Harbor, Butler enlisted in the Army Air Core and was in the Operation Torch in North Africa. He later was assigned to Italy where he was awarded the Bronze Star and was a bomber pilot flying B-17s. In 1944, while in Italy, he was pleased to be able to meet Pope Pious.

Butler was married for 64 years to his wife, Jean, and he has one son. He plays golf three times a week at Briarwood Country Club with his buddies who help him line up his drives and putts.
