Brittingham: Reader disagrees on refunds in Sun City

I disagree with those among us who argue that we should receive refunds since the rec centers have been closed due to a forced shutdown secondary to COVID-19.
The people who believe this perhaps do not understand the nature of our yearly fee. This fee is not a user fee. It is an assessment that we have agreed to when we purchased our homes in Sun City. Research will show that this is a bargain compared to most other large retirement communities.
By this flawed logic, all winter visitors should get a substantial discount every year since most of them are absent for at least six months. Along the same lines, this fee is based upon each household, not how many people are residing therein. I am not at all bothered by paying the full amount as a homeowner, nor not getting “money back” because I am not residing here for five months of each year.
I think our community is well managed and has a solid financial base compared with other similar communities. The yearly assessments are key to our success.
