A kaleidoscope of colored marker cones, ribbons, guide sticks and even hula hoops laid out and arranged around the chipping  area and putting greens at the Briarwood Country Club practice facility, 20800 N. 135th Ave., Sun City West will be the setting greeting visitors.

That will be the setting when Briarwood hosts a fundraising event for First Tee of Phoenix. The event is scheduled Friday, Jan. 27. It will be a 4-person scramble, with men playing teal tees and women playing gold tees. The entry fee is $75 for Briarwood members and their personal guests, and $100 for non-members.

Registration begins at noon and a shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. To register, call 623-584-5301 or email headgolfpro@briarwoodcc.com.

In addition to tournament play, a troop of young children and teens from all walks of life will gather for not only lessons in golf and golf etiquette, but for guidance in life skills and character lessons through creative activities and instructional programs that incorporate the fundamental teachings of golf. That is the mission of the First Tee of Phoenix golf program for young golfers. First Tee of Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created for the purpose of providing affordable access to golf and golf learning facilities for young people in Maricopa County from all walks of life, particularly those who otherwise might not have an opportunity to play.

For those interested, volunteer opportunities abound for the First Tee of Phoenix program. Donations of a wide variety of golf equipment also exists, including balls, shoes, clubs, bags, clothes and more.
