Benevilla leadership and staff extended a “thank you” to the agency’s board of directors after successfully meeting head-on the challenges of 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was a difficult year of constantly adapting and finding ways to restructure our programs and services to continue to serve the community,” said Joanne Thomson, Benevilla president and chief executive officer. “The leadership and direction of our board has been extraordinary.”

Benevilla was created as a not-for-profit organization in 1981 by Sun Cities area residents out of concern local services were not readily available to the community. Their mission was to promote health and independence by providing supportive services to their neighbors.

Then, a group of 30 volunteers helping with errands and home care services and a handful of employees. Today, Benevilla includes a network of Life Enrichment Day programs, numerous support and educational services, daycare and nursery, comprehensive care-management programs and social activities.

The 2020 Benevilla Board of Directors include Conrad Graff, chairman; Shannon Arriola, vice chairwoman; Larry Vering, treasurer; Harriet Doolittle, co-secretary; Lora Johnson, co-secretary; John Bridgford; Merlyn Carlson; Arlene Dixson; Delaine Donohue; Birt Kellam; Kim Sterner; Oana Constantinescu; Dick Stuckey; Patricia Lewis Finnell; Dawn Tompkins; Gary Frisch; and Brian Laurie.

Throughout 2020, the Benevilla Board of Directors served more than 800 hours in service to the success of the organization and to the people it serves. While many also juggled personal and professional hurdles over the year, the dedication of the Benevilla board never dwindled when help was needed.
