Arend: Reader hopes members speak up on bylaws in Sun City

Posted

The Recreation Centers of Sun City Board of Directors sent an email to the membership about the proposed bylaw revisions.

I hope all members have read through them. The ad hoc Bylaws Committee did two things for us that I am sure they assumed we would think were wonderful. They lowered the quorum for the annual membership meeting to 800 and will now allow us to get signatures on RCSC property. The bottom line is we would be able to vote at our own membership meeting, but it will still be up to the board whether they will act on our proposed motions or not. If they choose not to act, we can call a special membership meeting if we acquire 3,200 member signatures and vote again with a quorum of 800 members,

Also, they are proposing that each member can only present 10 proxies at any given meeting.

I ask, how can the ad hoc committee or the board think these changes are in any way giving the members back their voice and right to vote at their own meeting? They are still making us jump through way too many hoops!

Our articles of incorporation state, “4. The Bylaws may be emended, modified, revised, or revoked by the Directors or by the Members. In the event of conflict concerning the bylaws as amended, modified, revised, or revoked by the Directors, that action of the Members shall prevail.”

I would hope that each Sun City member in good standing will actively read the committee’s proposal of changes to our bylaws and watch the video of the video of the Oct. 10 member/board exchange if you did not attend.
