The Arizona Mayflower Society held its annual luncheon meeting April 27 at the Sun City Country Club. Sun City National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Agua Fria chapter members Martha Emmons and Honorary Chapter Regent Shirley Staggs attended.
The Arizona Mayflower Society has more than 400 members who are direct descendants of the Plymouth Pilgrims. Emmons descends from Pilgrim Francis Cooke. Hers husband Joe descends from four Pilgrims: Richard Warren, John Tilley, John Howland and James Chilton. Staggs descends from indentured servant George Soule.
To become a member of the Mayflower Society one must prove their direct lineage back to a Mayflower Pilgrim. The Mayflower carried 102 passengers to Massachusetts. Almost half died the first harsh winter leaving 26 families of known descendants. The National Society is made up of 52 regional societies, consisting of 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.
