Maricopa County pet owners who can’t afford to have their four-legged loved ones spayed or neutered may be in luck. Fix.Adopt.Save., a campaign of the Alliance for Companion Animals, is offering a free Spay & Neuter Weekend for dogs and cats Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 29-March 1.
Check-in is 7 a.m., and organizers advise pet owners to arrive early as services will be provided to up to 800 animals on a first-come, first-served basis. Pets spayed or neutered during the event also will be vaccinated and microchipped for free, according to an event flyer. Separate vaccinations and microchipping will not be offered during the event.
Services will be offered at five locations throughout the valley:
Avondale Civic Center Library, 11350 Civic Center Drive, Avondale, Four surgical spay/neuter mobile units will serve 100 dogs and 80 cats per day. The line will begin in front of the library and wrap around the south end of the building.
Arizona Humane Society Veterinary Clinic-Phoenix, 1311 W. Hatcher Road, Phoenix, will serve 20 dogs and 20 cats per day.
Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic-Phoenix, 950 W. Hatcher Road, Phoenix, will serve 40 dogs and 40 cats per day. Entrance to the clinic is at 11th Avenue and Hatcher Road.
Arizona Humane Society Clinic-South Mountain, 1521 W. Dobbins Road, Phoenix, will serve 20 dog and 20 cats per day.
Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic-Mesa, 7246 E. Main St., Suite 3, Mesa, will serve 55 dogs and 55 cats on Saturday and 35 dogs and 35 cats on Sunday.
Space availability is based on the sex, species, age, weight and size of the animal, and there is a limit of two pets per household.
To qualify for surgery, pets must weigh between 3 and 50 pounds and be under 5 years old. They also must be friendly, in good health and cannot be obese. Female dogs and cats cannot be in heat or pregnant, and males must have both testicles descended into their scrotums.
Pet owners are advised not to feed their animals after 10 p.m. the night before surgery, but they may give them water.
Feral cats will not be accepted at the event. For information about helping feral, stray or free-roaming cats, call the Spay Neuter Hotline at 602-265-7729.
