Agua Fria DAR chapter rings bells to celebrate Constitution Day

Posted

Members of the Sun City Agua Fria National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter celebrated National Constitution Day Sept. 17, meeting virtually to ring their bells for one full minute at 1 p.m. Arizona time.

In 1955 the NSDAR, a nonpolitical organization, petitioned congress to set aside the week of Sept. 17 for the observance of Constitution Week. A year later, the U.S. Congress adopted the proposal and President Eisenhower signed the law Aug. 1, 1956, making Sept. 17 National Constitution Day.

Since 1956, many DAR chapters across America have special constitution luncheons with guest speakers and set aside time to ring the bells as they were rung Sept. 17, 1787. NSDAR’s mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism, preserve the past, enhance the present and invest in the future.
