The Aquatic Center is the highest elevation (7,000 feet) 50-meter pool in the world. Many swim teams from around the world visit the pool to train at high altitude. A team from Australia was practicing there during the meet.

The trio of Earl Peters, Bill Shaw and Bill Travis won first place in all of their events for their respective age groups. They’ve been practicing for more than two months for this meet.

• Mr. Shaw (60-64): 500 yds Free-1st place (7:46.98), 200 yds Free-1st place (2:59.25), 100 yds IM-1st place (1:34.13),100 yds Free-1st place (1:13.45), 100 yds Breast-1st place (1:49.58).

• Mr. Peters (65-69): 100 yds IM-1st place (1:15.98), 50 yds Fly-1st place (32.73), 100 yds Free-1st place (1:07.00), 50 yds Back-1st place (37.24), 100 yds Fly-1st place (1:23.89).

• Mr. Travis (70-74): 500 yds Free-1st place (8.10.48), 200 yds Free-1st place (3:01.44), 100 yds Free-1st place (1:16.18).

The next major meet for the Sun City Starrs will be the State Masters Championship March 29-31 in Tucson at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center at the University of Arizona. More than 200 swimmers from all around Arizona will compete for the fastest swimmer in each age group in every event.

Following that will be the National Masters Meet in Mesa at the end of April.

The Starrs Swim Team meets 7-9 a.m. Monday through Friday at the Bell Recreation Center, 16820 N. 99th Ave. New members are always welcome to join. Come to a practice and see.
