West Valley Youth Orchestra open to young students

Posted

The West Valley Youth Orchestra (WVYO) program offers young students the opportunity to join with peers for intensive orchestral training and musical performances.

The WVYO was founded in the spring of 1997, and has grown to include more than 85 students participating yearly. Students range in age from 8 to 19 and are accepted by audition. There are two orchestras: the Cadet Strings, for intermediate string players, directed by Trista Kruckenberg, and the Youth Orchestra, a full orchestra with woodwinds, brass and percussion, directed by Claire Gordon.

Their concerts feature a wide variety of music. They perform at retirement communities, churches, high school auditoriums and various civic events.

In 2012 and 2014, the WVYO performed in the West Coast Youth Orchestra Festival at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In 2014 and 2017, the WVYO played a side-by-side Christmas concert with the West Valley Symphony, and will perform again with the WVS Sunday, Dec. 22.

The WVYO also hosts a Chamber Music Summer Camp for string players annually in June. Each year, the WVYO commissions a composer to write a piece for the camp orchestra to perform together which is premiered at the camp concert.
