MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a known violent and wanted fugitive from California has been fatally shot by police in Mesa.
Tempe police detectives who are part of the Fugitive Task Force Squad and Special Investigations Bureau were conducting surveillance on the man around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and followed him into Mesa.
Police say the officers felt threatened and the man was shot and pronounced dead at the scene near Southern Avenue and Extension.
They say a gun was found at the scene, but it’s unclear if the suspect pointed it at officers.
The name of the fugitive wasn't immediately released and police didn’t release any details about why he was wanted in California.
Mesa police has assumed the investigation into the fatal shooting in which no officers were injured.
This is the second officer-involved shooting in the Valley in 2020. Both have been fatal.
