Walter Art Gallery begins its winter season with ‘Abstract Formation’

Posted

Walter Art Gallery presents “Abstract Formation”, a small group exhibition featuring the work of Charmagne Coe, Tom Ortega, and Lorena Suarez.

These three noted local artists bring unique formations of form, color, and composition to Walter Art Gallery this winter, according to a press release.

Charmagne Coe creates mixed media paintings, assemblages and drawings in a genre she calls, Soft Brut, described the release.

Her paintings create expression and narrative in mixed media such as acrylic, watercolor, ink, pastel, feathers, cloth, plants, or whatever intuitively pushes into her imagination and the canvas, the release.

“I am creating more bare, rudimentary expressions which combine my watercolor brush, ink and pastel techniques with new techniques in three-dimensional assemblage, collage and fiber arts,” Ms. Coe said, adding that the contrasts of physical elements and theme “emotionally speak to me.”

She received her bachelor of science in elementary education with a minor in art from Northern Arizona University. Her work has been included and awarded in various publications and is currently represented by Royse Contemporary in Scottsdale.

Tom Ortega creates minimalist sculptures and paintings. Each piece informs the next with his process reflecting a passage of time, the artist sands the wood surfaces, pulls them apart and puts them back again allowing each piece to live a life before it is complete.

Mr. Ortega received his bachelor’s in drawing/painting from North Texas University and a bachelor’s in communications from Texas Tech University. His work is included in many private, public and corporate collections.

Recently, he was added to the Polsinelli collection and was featured in the Microdwell exhibition at the historic Shemer Art Center. His work is currently represented by Mary Tomas Gallery in Dallas, Texas.

Abstract expressionist Lorena Suarez creates “emotionally fueled mixed media paintings,” the release noted. She received her formal education in communication studies in Monterrey, where she discovered her passion for painting.

Her artwork uses mixed media along with a variety of colors as her paintings offer a kaleidoscope of colors with the goal of opening the minds of viewers and bringing emotions to the surface, according to the release.

The Walter Art Gallery will host an artist reception, with light hors d’oeuvres and beverages, for “Abstract Formation” from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15. The closing reception is 6:30-9 p.m., Friday Dec. 20.

“Abstract Formation” will be on display from Nov. 15 to Dec. 20 at Walter Art Gallery, 6425 E. Thomas Road, Scottsdale.

The Walter Project consists of an innovative community of artists, entertainers, makers, and visionaries who form various creative ventures such as The Walter Art Gallery and The Walter Hive.

Known for their art cars such as Walter the Bus, Big Red, and Kalliope, the purpose of this community is to “share joy and spark creativity through unique experiences,” the release said.

If unable to attend the opening or closing receptions, schedule a private viewing, the release added.
