James A. Thomas has been appointed to the Florence Unified School District’s Governing Board, Pinal County School Superintendent Jill Broussard recently announced.
According to a press release, Thomas is a familiar face to the FUSD community. He was first appointed to the Florence Unified School Board in January 2002 and since then has been a consistent advocate for district families and students. During his tenure, Thomas served as governing board president, vice president and member.
Thomas will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Denise Guenther. Thomas will be seated until Dec. 31, 2022.
It’s hoped that his previous years of service, along with his extensive knowledge of school board policies and connection to the Florence and San Tan Valley communities will enable a smooth transition into the vacant seat.
In the release, Thomas said he is looking forward to working with the current board members and is eager to celebrate the end of the year activities throughout the district. He especially looks forward to the high school graduation ceremonies.
“I want to thank Superintendent Broussard for the honor and privilege of appointing me to serve on the Governing Board for FUSD #1,” he stated.
Superintendent Chris Knutsen added, “FUSD is grateful to Mr. Thomas for his willingness to once again serve on the Governing Board. Mr. Thomas’ values and ethical practices will help strengthen our board’s goals, while his civic mindedness will help bridge the district with our community stakeholders. Mr. Thomas’ appointment is a win for FUSD.”
FUSD School Board Past-President Guenther announced her resignation during a Governing School Board meeting on Tuesday, April 12.
She said her resignation was spurred by school boards having become too politicized and constantly having to battle the state Legislature.
“Politics do not belong in schools and board members should be true to their nonpartisan position,” she said while announcing her resignation. “Elect the right state politicians that will put bills in place to improve public education and not continue to starve into failure.”
