Brophy College Preparatory seniors, John Cole Lomax and Henry Palmer, have been awarded 2021 National Merit $2,500 scholarships after being named National Merit finalists earlier in the year.

Lomax will attend the University of California, Berkeley, and Palmer will attend Stanford University, according to a press release.

Both recent graduates were “outstanding representatives of Brophy’s Class of 2021,” with Lomax receiving the annual Academic Excellence Award, given to one senior at graduation.

Graduating in the top 5% of his class, the award citation noted how Lomax consistently chose what was described as “the most challenging courses offered.” He was also involved with the groundbreaking Brophy CubeSat project and rowed crew.

Palmer is a top scholar and top athlete who swam with Brophy’s renowned swim program and was named a 6A Premier Swim Academic All-Star by Sports360AZ, the release said.

A marathon swimmer, he completed the 20-Bridges Swim around the island of Manhattan (28 miles) and the open water swim to Alcatraz in 2019, said the release, noting a grueling 12.2-mile, open-water swim, without a wetsuit, off the Santa Barbara coast in July 2020.

Also, Palmer was a United States Presidential Scholar candidate, according to the release.

Nationally, about 1.6 million high school students entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program competition by taking the PSAT during their junior year. From this number, approximately 15,000 went on to become finalists and 7,500 ultimately won scholarships.

Brophy had eight 2021 National Merit Finalists, the release added.
