Event planners looking to 2021 to resume action

Most arts events in Surprise appear shelved through the rest of the year because of COVID-19 virus conditions.

“We’re all taking the same approach of looking forward to January and trying to schedule things out from there,” Danielle Osborne, a management analyst with the City Manager’s Office, told the Surprise Arts and Cultural Advisory Commission Sept. 14. “We’re hoping things improve by then.”

The arts commission has cancelled most of its events this year because of the ongoing pandemic.

“As guidelines and restrictions are lifted, then we can get back to looking at in-person,” Ms. Osborne said.

Thunderbird Artists canceled all its 2020 events but has the ninth annual Surprise Fine Art and Wine Festival as its first event of 2021.

That’s scheduled between Friday, Jan. 8 and Sunday, Jan. 10 in the City Center.

The next Surprise Speaker Series event, which were canceled for most of 2020, will feature author Jim Turner on Wednesday, Jan. 20. It will be a virtual event, but could turn to in-person attendance if conditions with COVID-19 improve by then.

A poetry slam has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, but because it is in person it can’t be officially sponsored by the city or the commission.
