The Surprise City Council approved an agreement June 7 for the Surprise Police Department to provide more school resource officers to the Dysart Unified School District.
DUSD had previously approved $360,000 to defray the total cost of salary and benefits for SROs at Ashton Ranch, Cimmaron Springs and Sonoran Heights middle schools.
Surprise already provides police service to the three DUSD high schools in Surprise, plus Paradise Honors charter high school.
This is a yearly agreement and may be extended annually upon written notification from DUSD by May 30 each year.
Police Chief Benny Pina told the city council the department is attempting to receive grant money to serve more schools.
