Sun Health offers class for ‘friends’ of those with dementia

Sun Health will host the free class “How to be a Friend to My Friend with Dementia,” 10-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22 at La Loma Health & Rehab, 14260 S. Denny Blvd., Litchfield Park.
Citing news reports, Sun Health officials said a recent survey found 38% of those living with dementia in high-income countries, like the U.S., reported feeling “...avoided, ignored and ostracized...” in their social life.
Some tips offered to help maintain friendships with those challenged by dementia or memory loss include:
Educate yourself. Ask questions about the diagnosis.
Be there. A visit, call or card can show you care.
Talk directly to your friend; not to their spouse or partner.
Be patient if your friend repeats themselves.
Offer reminders. If your friend looks confused, give your name and connection.
The Sun Health Memory Care Navigator progarm helps those with memory loss and their family members and friends identify support, services and resources that may be helpful in navigating the dementia journey.
The program is provided at no cost to clients thanks to funding from Sun Health Foundation donors, and support by USAA, Sundt Foundation and the John F. Long Foundation.
