In March 2024, members of Desert Garden United Church of Christ, 18818 N. 128th Ave., initiated Cycles of Kindness, a program designed to provide free bicycles to people who rely on bikes as their primary means of transportation.
The church works closely with the Surprise Resource Center and the Westside Assistance Center in identifying recipients.
Community members have responded to the church’s appeal for bicycle donations with 107 bikes to date. The Sun City West Cycle Club repairs and refurbishes so all the bikes are ready to ride for their new owners.
As of mid-November, 59 bicycles have been given to individuals with another 16 ready for recipients. The church includes a helmet and lock with each bike.
Organizations and schools who have received bikes include HomeBase Shelter in Surprise, a Native American Connections shelter for homeless young adults, and Thompson Ranch, Surprise, and Kingswood elementary schools. Several adults have received bikes through recommendations by community organizations.
To donate a bicycle or to represent a community organization wishing to recommend a recipient visit desertgradenucc.org or call 623-584-1795.
