A blessing of 200-plus crocheted sleep mats made from recycled plastic bags for the homeless was performed by Rev. Brett Winters Sept. 10 at the Sun City Christian Church, 9745 W. Palmeras Drive.
Each mat is added to a backpack supplied with water, personal hygiene supplies and snacks. The Caring Angels volunteer organization, founded and directed by Jody Swank, collects the plastic bags and cuts them into strips to be made into plarn (plastic yarn) to be crocheted.
It is a community effort with friends, family and neighbors contributing to the project.
The Disciples Women’s Ministry of the Sun City Christian Church meets 9 a.m. every fourth Monday to cut bags, make plarn and crochet mats. All are welcome to join this group and can call 602 972-6179 for more information.
Jody Swank can be reached at yarning8@cox.net.
Additional help and donations are alway appreciated. Caring Angels is requesting plastic bags.
