Soroptimist International of the East Valley presented two women with the organization’s signature award, the Live Your Dream scholarship.

Paula L. was selected as the first-place recipient, receiving $1,500 and the runner-up, Hanan D. received $1,000. The Live Your Dream Scholarship is designed to help women continue their dream by providing resources to further their education, skills and employment prospects, according to a press release.

Paula is the mother of a two-year old and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in biology.

“It is important to me that I achieve my goals,” Paula said in the release. “Not only for me, but for my son to see that anything is possible if you work hard enough, regardless of your backgrounds and short comings. And this opportunity will help me achieve that goal.”

Hanan is working towards a Bachelor’s degree in social work and has a two-year old daughter.

“Despite my experience, I refused to become another statistic - I won’t let my past define my future,” Hanan said. “This scholarship will help me stay ahead and get an education that will help me serve populations that face the most disadvantages in life.”

Funding for SIEV’s scholarships is possible due to the supporters of the Lost Dutchman Arts and Crafts Fair.
