Three people are tied to the thefts of more than 20 vehicles from the rental center at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

Phoenix police report Rick White, 23, Tyshawnee Collins, 20, and Dwayne Edward Cantley, 45, were arrested May 15 in Avondale on various charges stemming from thefts that started as early as January.

Phoenix police state Mr. White allegedly stole 13 late-model rental vehicles from Hertz. He and Ms. Collins reportedly worked at the center.

In total, police said they were investigating the theft of 26 late-model rental vehicles from Hertz and Enterprise.

Phoenix police believe Mr. White and another person stole 13 late-model vehicles and possibly 13 or more from Hertz and Enterprise between Jan. 1 and Feb. 23.

On April 2, the director of security for Hertz told authorities at least 26 vehicles were missing, but were later found to have crossed into Mexico via Nogales. He also said Mr. White had been an employee between Oct. 24 and Feb. 21 — the last day he was seen working. Mr. White never returned to work and was subsequently terminated due to no contact with the company.

However, during his employment, Mr. White has been seen on camera allowing at least 13 vehicles to exit the booths without scanning them. A description of the driver was not clear.

On April 11, authorities found a stolen Enterprise vehicle in a parking lot near 32nd Street and Indian School Road, where Ms. Collins and Mr. White live. Police learned that two days earlier Ms. Collins had allowed the vehicle out of the gate without scanning it or verifying a contract. Or rather, she pretended to scan the bar code on the vehicle but the code did not register to the vehicle. She reportedly did this with nine other vehicles since March 18.

In surveillance videos, police state Mr. White is seen driving away with some of the vehicles. Court documents state most of the vehicles are trucks and were documented crossing into Mexico soon after the thefts.

Dwayne Cantley (MCSO)

Around 5 p.m. May 15, Phoenix detectives tracked a stolen Chevrolet Malibu to a residence in the area of Dysart and Thomas roads. It was initially spotted near the couple’s residence in Phoenix.

Police learned the Avondale residence belonged to Mr. Cantley, a friend of the couple, and that Mr. Cantley was the on-duty Hertz employee when the Malibu left the center. All three were arrested and faces charges of theft-means of transportation and fraudulent schemes/artifices.

Ms. Collins admitted to the crimes, said she would take responsibility, but would not detail her actions.

Mr. Cantley already had a valid arrest warrant when officers took him into custody in his driveway. He admitted to being friends with the other suspects but said he did not scan or check the Malibu as it left the rental center because he thought his friend had rented it.

Court documents for Ms. Collins state the value of the property taken to be $350,000.

Judge Gregory J. Gnepper set their bonds at $1,500. They are due in court May 24.

Hertz did not immediately respond to requests for information about the case.
