This year’s New Horizons High School Student Art Exhibition --- on display at the Shemer Art Center through Feb. 13 --- showcases a total of 66 scholarships totaling $4,475 that were awarded Jan. 18 to 34 high school artists from across the Valley, including several from Scottsdale.

This exhibition features the top two works of art, which instructors selected, from high schools throughout the Valley. Local students hail from Arcadia. Chaparral, Desert Mountain, Horizon and Saguaro high schools as well as Rancho Solano Preparatory.

About 25 Valley residents and art organiztions donated scholarships of $50, $75 and $100. Many donors have been long-time supporters of this exhibition at the Shemer Art Center, including the Shemer Family and the Shemer Art Center’s first director, a press release states.

Local scholarship recipients, mentioned with the scholarship donors, include

  • Caroline Cooper (Horizon High School) --- The Luis & Gloria Argueso and The Alan & Terri Bandler awards;
  • Dana Corbo (Chaparral High School) --- The Michael & Carmen Blank and The Shemer Art Center & Museum Association, Inc. awards;
  • Daniel Neary (Horizon High School) --- The Louis & Gloria Argueso, The Ken & Mary Neubauer and The Melissa Barron Memorial awards;
  • Griffin Finke (Arcadia High School) --- The Linton-Barnhill Award;
  • Kayli Battel (Saguaro High School) --- The Arizona Artists Guild and The Linton-Barnhill awards;
  • Laura Jones (Chaparral High School) --- The Jennings Family Trust Award;
  • Lois Landry (Arcadia High School) --- The Sally Orkild Memorial Award;
  • Megan Yarnall (Desert Mountain High School) --- The Art Renaissance Initiative, The Fred & Kathy Fleet and The Lima Awards;
  • Tara Bromfeld (Rancho Solano Prep School) --- Jen’s Award; and
  • Tyler Crum (Saguaro High School) --- The Linton-Barnhill and The Rising Star Award.

“This year’s exhibition features over 70 works of art and includes a variety of mediums such as drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, mixed media and digital art,” Shonna James, president & executive director of the Shemer Art Center, said in a prepared statement.

“Because each school chooses its top two works, the resulting exhibition always showcases the very best of the Valley’s high school student artists. It also showcases the quality art education being provided at each school by their art instructors.”
