Second suspect in Avondale homicide is arrested in California

A second suspect appears to have been connected to the fatal shooting in Avondale of a man who was bicycling home from work.

Avondale police on Tuesday afternoon said they developed probable cause for the arrest of Marcos Cruz Gaeta. It was not immediately known how he was allegedly involved in the incident.

Police had already arrested Jorge Molina in December in connection with the March 2018 shooting that killed Joseph Knight.

Avondale police on Wednesday morning said when they initially arrested Mr. Molina, he was questioned and subsequently released shortly thereafter. No charges were apparently filed. Records from his arrest state Mr. Molina could not say why his vehicle and phone were in the area at the time of the homicide.

However, his Form IV says "Jorge advised that his stepfather Marcos had driven it (Mr. Molina's vehicle) a few times without Jorge's permission."

Avondale police would not say whether Mr. Gaeta is Mr. Molina's stepfather.

Avondale detectives worked with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office and other law enforcement agencies who arrested Mr. Gaeta Friday in California.

He is currently in custody in California on charges related to a 2016 murder occurring in Indio, California. His extradition is pending on charges related to the Avondale homicide.

Avondale detectives and the Indio Police Department are continuing with their investigations.
