Scottsdale City Council approves contract between Scottsdale Stadium and PAC-12 Conference

Stadium to produce, play and broadcast baseball tournament from 2022 to 2024

Posted

A three-year contract, funded by the city’s tourism and events budget, between Scottsdale Stadium and the PAC-12 Conference has been approved to broadcast the annual men’s baseball tournaments at the stadium and to allow practices at Indian School Park’s baseball facility.

At the Aug. 24 meeting, Mayor David Ortega and council voted to approve the contract for Scottsdale Stadium to be in charge of producing the tournaments for the PAC-12 men’s baseball tournaments along with the necessary budget for the first year of operations.

As outlined in the city staff report, the stadium underwent “major expansions and improvements” that have encouraged the city to provide new and exciting special events and activities, like sporting events at the newly improved site.

“PAC-12 will produce a 5-day men’s baseball tournament in May of the next three years that brings fans, teams, coaches, staff, and families to the Scottsdale area for collegiate championship baseball,” the report stated.
By approving this deal, the city of Scottsdale will further establish itself as a destination for leisure and sports travel.

“PAC-12 and [the city] will work closely with tourism partners, Experience Scottsdale, and Arizona Sports and Entertainment Commission to drive people into Scottsdale based hotels and lodging in addition to exposure to Old Town Scottsdale merchants, restaurants, and entertainment,” the report stated.

Additionally, PAC-12 will market Scottsdale as a travel destination through measures, like mentioning the city in paid advertisements for the tournaments and in-game announcements.

The first tournament will be held in May of 2022 with eight teams playing approximately 13 to 15 games at Scottsdale Stadium and practices being held at Indian School Park.

“Teams playing in the tournament will be from schools within the PAC-12 Conference ...from universities in California, Washington, Utah, Arizona and Oregon,” the city staff report stated.

With the contract’s approval, the city also approved a transfer of $75,000 from the 2021-2022 tourism development operating fund contingency to the tourism and events department operating budget for the first operating year.

The city came to an agreement for Scottsdale to be responsible for all expenses needed to operate the tournament each year and PAC-12 to be responsible for the tournament’s presentation as well as marketing the city and events.

“PAC-12 shall create and implement a marketing and promotion plan for the event to provide assurance of increased tourism to the city as a result of the event,” the report stated.

On or before Jan. 1 of each year throughout the term of the contract, PAC-12 will provide its plan for marketing and promotion to the city and begin work on the approved plan for advertising the tournaments.

In preparation for the contract, the PAC-12 presented marketing deliverables and details for the event to the Tourism Development Commision on Aug. 27.

“Under this contract, PAC-12 shall deliver the post event report to the city of Scottsdale no later than thirty days after each tournament,” the report stated.

Depending on the report’s findings, the marketing funds from the city of $75,000 will either be reduced based on spending less than the allotted funds or PAC-12 will pay the difference for exceeding the set amount.
