Scottsdale captain retires after 40-year legacy in the fire service

Scottsdale Fire Captain Ken Farrell spent 40 years in the fire service running calls in some of the toughest neighborhoods in the Valley.
His last 16 years were with Scottsdale Fire Department — the majority at Fire Station 601. July 30 is the last day he reports to a fire station.
“We have the great opportunity to celebrate the legacy of his career and truly thank him for his service,” said Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon.
Farrell spent his first 24 years with Rural/Metro growing his career in Maricopa County from Sun City to Cashion and to Apache Junction, according to a press release.
He served several years in Fire Prevention learning about building construction and codes. He also served in north Scottsdale where he was quickly educated in wildland fires. Farrell is also proud of becoming a paramedic.
“I’ve truly been blessed in my career. It has been an amazing evolution. I have always striven to learn more, to know as much about my craft as I could,” said Farrell. “That translated into me being a captain and passing all of that information to my firefighters.”
“Ken has run thousands of calls — that is truly no small feat,” said Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Freeburg. “He was nothing but a professional the whole time he has been here. I wish him nothing but the best.”
