Merv and Joy Schantz of Surprise celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family at Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant in Glendale on June 25.

They met on a blind double date in November 1969. The following evening they sat on “A” Mountain to watch an ASU football game. From then on they were exclusively a couple.

They were married at Glen’s Garden Chapel in Glendale on June 25, 1971, uniting them and their five children. The family loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting and playing sports.

Merv was a teacher and coach at Desert Sands Junior High School in Phoenix. Joy was a secretary at the Arizona Game and Fish Department in Phoenix. They retired and moved to Surprise in 2001.

Their children are Denny (JoAnne), Paul (Alisa), Kathleen (Kris), and Karrie; Robbie (deceased). Eight grandchildren are Tara (Kellen) Orta, Zachary Tape, Mic (Chelsea) Pauletich, Hunter Pauletich, Courtney, Ashley, Kevin, and Kyle Schantz. Seven great-grandchildren are Adelie, Emma, Olive, Minnie, KJ (Kellen Jr.), Colton, and Atlas.
