Representative Aaron Lieberman to receive national award for support of AmeriCorps

Posted

In recognition of his strong support for national service, State Representative Aaron Lieberman will receive the State Leadership Award from Voices for National Service, a coalition working to ensure Americans of all ages can serve and volunteer in their community.

The award is being given to Rep. Lieberman in appreciation of his remarkable commitment to national service as a strategy to solve local issues, expand opportunity, and build stronger, healthier communities.

It will be formally presented to him at the 17th Annual Friends of National Service Awards in Washington, DC on Feb. 11.

“Representative Lieberman is a vocal advocate for placing citizens at the center of solving challenges in their communities,” said AnnMaura Connolly, president of Voices for National Service. “After college, he co-founded a nonprofit that helps children enter kindergarten prepared to succeed. Jumpstart is fueled by national service, and over the last 25 years, the organization has trained over 50,000 college students and community volunteers who have provided language, literacy and social-emotional support to 123,000 preschoolers from under-served communities."

After being elected to the Arizona State House, Rep. Lieberman introduced legislation to establish a John McCain Public Service Scholarship Fund to provide additional state scholarship support to AmeriCorps members, according to a press release.

“I’ve seen in my own life the incredible impact service has in opening up whole new worlds to people,” said Rep. Lieberman in a prepared statement. “Both the impact you have in terms of the service you do and the impact that it has on the person doing the service in terms of just expanding their horizons. I was proud to introduce a bill with a simple goal: connect responsibility with opportunity. If signed into law, this legislation will make college more affordable for Arizona students who serve in an AmeriCorps program. I’m honored to receive this prestigious award from Voices for National Service.”

Rep. Lieberman joins a bipartisan group of distinguished leaders in government, business, and journalism from across the nation being honored, including Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Glenn Thompson (R-PA) and Donna Shalala (D-FL), Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO), Chris Coons (D-DE) and Rick Scott (R-FL), Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), and CNN’s Fareed Zakaria.
