Students with perfect attendance will not be feted at Queen Creek Unified School District in an effort to keep sick children at home.
Wording such as “Perfect attendance will be awarded to students without absences, tardies, or signed out early (for any reason) on a semester basis,” in the Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary School student handbook, has been removed from all QCUSD student handbooks by a unanimous vote of the Governing Board.
The change was suggested by Governing Boardmember Jennifer Revolt.
“I’d like to propose that we do away with perfect-attendance awards, at least for the coming year,” she said prior to a vote on the consent agenda.
“I feel like it’s an encouragement to send kids to school when they’re sick and so if we can avoid incentivizing that at least for the next year, especially if it ends up some are online (and) some are not,” she said.
The Governing Board approved the 2020-21 student handbooks for Desert Mountain Elementary, Frances Brandon Pickett Elementary, Faith Mather Sossaman Elementary, Gateway Polytechnic Academy Elementary, Jack Barnes Elementary, Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary School, Queen Creek Elementary, Silver Valley Elementary, Newell Barney Junior High, Queen Creek Junior High, Eastmark High School and Queen Creek High School.
