New 'Imagination' exhibit coming to Olney Gallery in Phoenix

First Friday reception open to the public Feb. 3

A new art exhibit is coming to Olney Gallery in Phoenix.

“Imagination: Art by Jose Benavidez and Monica Gisel” will be on display Jan. 30-Feb. 23 at Olney Gallery at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 100 W. Roosevelt St., Phoenix. A First Friday reception takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3.

Benavides imagines new life to old materials, reworking prints from the press or creating unique sculptures out of discarded materials. Educated as a Mechanical Engineer with an MFA in Studio Art, his art reflects his left and right brain.

“I like to put many layers of meaning into my art,” he shared in a news release. “I love to give my art patrons the feeling of discovery.”

His work has been displayed throughout the Southwest, including Nevada’s annual Burning Man event.

Gisel is a Mexican visual artist inspired by her indigenous background and surrealism. In this exhibition, she conveys the delirium of dreams and imagination.

“I am looking for the opportunity to close the circle of my outward journey as an immigrant woman. … Despite the challenges of being an immigrant of color, I can call this land my home and no longer feel alien to the landscape that shelters me,” she shared.

Gisel’s work has been displayed in Mexico and the United States.

The Olney Gallery is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m.-noon Sundays; and is closed Saturdays.
