Mayor Lane encourages, updates Rotary Club of Scottsdale

The Rotary Club of Scottsdale recently welcomed Rotarian and Scottsdale Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane to the club’s virtual Zoom meeting.

The hybrid meeting  also was an on-site luncheon at the Scottsdale McCormick with temperature checks and limited seating, according to a press release, noting that masks and social distancing practices were required.

Beginning in June 2004, Mayor Lane served for four years on the Scottsdale City Council and began his first term as mayor in January 2009. He was reelected to office in 2012 and began his third term in January 2017.

He spoke to Rotarians about his 2019 and 2020 State of the City Address and reports that were postponed because of restrictions of community gathering and celebrating, the release said.

Mayor Lane’s topics discussed included:

• Ballot proposition 420 passage – the charter amendment preventing Desert Discovery Center, Desert EDGE or similar projects from being built on the preserve without a specific vote of the people.

• City Council working together to rework and reconsider some private land development projects in downtown.

• City’s capital improvements project bond initiative win, which represented a recovery and advancement in our community communications, trust and vision for Scottsdale’s future.

• Drought contingency planning and water efficiencies and policies.

• Citizen property and sales tax resources.

• Scottsdale’s diverse economic and business environment, he noted as the fundamental importance, significance and reputation of the tourism industry in the community known for its signature events as seen at experiencescottsdale.com.

• He stated 2020 was an unexpected learning experience – dealing with impact and costs of COVID-19 pandemic; Maricopa County being declared a hotspot; demonstrations, riots and attacks; and the respective public health emergency declarations by the city, county, state and federal entities.

• Scottsdale's welcoming environment and quality of life makes it a prime location for many business investments worldwide, a top city for entrepreneurial startups and cutting edge technology, he said citing examples such as revitalization of Scottsdale Cure and McDowell Corridors and companies collaborating in advanced research and care as well as the Scottsdale Airpark redevelopment, revitalization of Old Town Gallery District and Museum Square entertainment districts.

• The need to continue attracting the best quality investments, jobs, products and tourists to Scottsdale was stressed.

• He gave an update on city of Scottsdale Sister Cities Association, noting most activities are on hold.

During the past 12 years, city leaders, according to the mayor, have demonstrated the ability to continue to have Scottsdale ranked among the highest in municipal government achievements.

Noting the importance of the new mayor and council members becoming acquainted and reacquainted with the city’s charter, Mayor Lane expressed confidence in their work to make Scottsdale a world-class community, the release added.

Recognizing his wife, Joanne, for her steadfast support throughout his service, he thanked rotarians for attending and "invited all to enjoy the wonderful things that make city of Scottsdale one of this nation’s genuinely great cities in which it has been his honor to serve as mayor."

RCS President Richard Signeski reminded rotarians of the online opportunity to virtually “bell-ring” for the Salvation Army at https://salarmy.us/ScottsdaleRotaryRedKettle to contribute directly or setup a personal friends/family donation link.
