Another day of reports saw COVID-19 cases declining in the Valley, but still registering 1,950 on Wednesday, according to the Maricopa County Department of Health.

The latest case counts, while down from the 2,900 reported on Tuesday, push the county’s overall number of those who have been infected to 181,920 as of Wednesday morning. The county also reported 18 deaths, raising the total overall to 3,835.

The county, like the state, continues to see increasing numbers of cases as a second wave resembling what happened in the region during the summer sweeps through the area.

The higher counts are pushing the seven-day average for cases dramatically higher during the past month. That average stood at 1,485 cases per day as of Nov. 14, a full 100 cases higher than the reported seven-day average on Nov. 13. That’s also up significantly from when the average was 236 cases on Oct. 1.

The county’s seven-day daily average of deaths, which lags behind cases by two to three weeks, has not risen as dramatically though it is poised to do so with rising counts.

As of Nov. 1, it stood at seven deaths per day, but county data indicate that rate will be rising over the next two weeks.

During the county’s summer spike, cases reached 3,809 cases in a day on June 29. The county is experiencing another surge, but case numbers in recent days, with last Friday’s high of 1,495 cases, just crossed a third of the worst day in the summer. The current surge shows no signs yet of slowing down.
