In Apache Junction, the Lost Dutchman Fire is 60% contained and, at the Southern Fire, firefighters are continuing to mop-up and extinguish any remaining heat today, May 8, officials said.

Lost Dutchman Fire

A total of 160 firefighters and aircraft worked to suppress the Lost Dutchman Fire, which started Thursday in the vicinity of Lost Dutchman Road and State Route 88.

“Crews worked overnight conducting burnout ops to help complete/secure fire line. 221-acre fire is 60% contained. Fire started Thursday P.M. NE of #ApacheJunction. Unknown cause, under investigation. SR 88 is open,” according to a May 8 Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management post on Twitter @azstateforestry.

A brush fire east of Goldfield Road near Southern Avenue had burned 50 acres as of the morning of May 8, the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona said.

“#SouthernFire update: Firefighters mapped fire by GPS this morning at 50ac, firefighters were on scene overnight and will continue to mop-up and extinguish any remaining heat today. All evacuations lifted last night and no current or anticipated threat to homes. #AZFire,” according to a Tweet @BLMAZFire.

A total of 32 acres had burned by the early night of May 7, officials said.

“#SouthernFire Update: 35ac; Firefighters have made good progress. Decreased winds, reduced fire behavior and helped firefighters to slow the fire growth. #AZFire,” according to a BLM Tweet at 7:07 p.m. Thursday.

Superstition Fire and Medical District reported May 7 that it had been joined by Phoenix Fire Department, Scottsdale Fire Department and Guadalupe Fire Department to fight the brush fire.
