Sun City author pens new edition of ‘The Art of Pickleball’

Posted

Back in 2004, when Richard and Gale Leach moved to Arizona, they had never heard of pickleball, which was new to the area. Thinking the game sounded like fun, they signed up for a beginner lesson.

After the beginner lesson, it seemed the only way to become a better player was by playing and asking other players for advice. Most players went out of their way to encourage “newbies” and promote their favorite pastime. Still, Ms. Leach shopped for books that would help her improve. She found only one and, while it had some good information, she wanted more.

Leach began taking notes so she wouldn’t forget what the better players told her. After about a year, she realized these notes were the start of the book she’d tried to find. Using her background as a technical writer, she composed the first edition of “The Art of Pickleball” in 2005. She was elated when it won the Arizona Book award (for Sports and Leisure) and when it became a best seller on Amazon.com.

Since then, Leach has revised the book four times to accommodate changing rules, techniques and strategies. For the new edition, she gathered information from many fine pickleball players, including four Pickleball Hall of Fame inductees, who contributed much to the book’s content. This edition contains nearly 80 more pages than the previous one, and it covers all new and changed rules for 2021-2022.

The new, fifth edition of “The Art of Pickleball” is available in paperback at Amazon.com and will soon be available everywhere books are sold. An updated, fifth-edition ebook is also in production and should be available before Christmas.
