Guest Commentary: Rec centers officials continue focus on safety

Posted

Recreation Centers of Sun City West officials are following the necessary COVID-19 data in its decision-making concerning closures of fitness centers, indoor pools and other indoor recreation venues.

Increasing caseload numbers and rates of COVID-19 positivity resulted in closures being extended into the second week of the new year.

Ever since mid-March when our community started to feel the impact of COVID-19, I have been using my Rec Center Show on your community radio station in the heart of Sun City West, 103.1 KSCW, to get updates from rec centers through General Manager Bill Schwind and other officials. The show airs every Tuesday at 8 a.m. and repeats every Thursday at 5 p.m.

It is important that you all stay informed, not only about the COVID-19 caseload data but also stay informed about the latest word from the county and state health departments regarding the game plan for vaccines. Stay in touch with your doctors as well and when you get your first vaccine shot, make sure which one you are getting so you get that same type of vaccine for your second shot. You can’t mix and match vaccines, meaning that if your first shot is from Pfizer, your second shot needs to also be from Pfizer as well. If you first shot is from Moderna, then your second shot must be a Moderna shot. As other vaccines come into play, the same sequence applies.

Arizona Department of Health Services officials said they plan to post vaccine locations in the same manner it posts COVID-19 test sites at the website azhealth.gov/covid19vaccine. Arizona Director of Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ also said vaccine sites will also be posted on vaccinefinder.org.

I wish you all and your families and friends good health and happiness in this new year.
