Great Hearts Academies will open 2 faith-based schools

Separate private schools set fall 2023 launch in Gilbert, Phoenix

Arizona-based charter-school chain Great Hearts Academies is expanding its school network to include Great Hearts Christos, private, faith-based academies set to open this fall in Gilbert and Phoenix.

The schools will include a Christ-based faith formation incorporated with the Great Hearts classical curriculum and will be led by Toyin Atolagbe, who served as headmaster of Great Hearts Lincoln, which was Arizona’s top-scoring school in 2022, according to data from the Arizona State Board of Education.

The mission of Christos is to glorify God by cultivating students who are intellectually, morally, and spiritually free with the belief that a Christian Classical education integrates faith and reason to know reality, according to a release from Great Hearts.

“I am called to serve families through Great Hearts Christos schools,” Altolagbe said in the release. “The opportunity to help foster a deeper love for God in the hearts of children is my highest aspiration, and I am grateful for this privilege.”

Great Hearts Christos will be serving grades K-5 at schools connected to Evident Life Church, 415 N. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, and Redemption Alhambra, 1830 W. Glenrosa Ave., Phoenix, with enrollment at each location expected to cap at 100 and 200 students, respectively.

Key additions to the classical curriculum include the addition of age-appropriate scripture instruction, morning prayer with the middle-school history programing placing a greater focus on Ancient Israel and the Early Church.

Families are not required to be Christian for their children to attend though children will be instructed from a Christian perspective while actively participating in faith-formation practices.

Enrollment is ongoing. Great Hearts Christos will have set tuition, but Great Hearts said in its release attendance will be within reach of all families through the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship program.

In addition, financial aid will be available for qualifying income levels.

Greats Hearts plans to open multiple campuses across Metro Phoenix, greater Arizona and in the future, other states.

Great Hearts is a nonprofit network of tuition-free public charter schools with classical preparatory K-12 academies. Great Hearts Academies serve more than 22,000 students at 37 tuition-free public charter schools in greater Phoenix and Texas.
