Suspects in Queen Creek officer-involved shooting are tied to 41 cases

Posted

A man and a woman are in custody following an officer-involved shooting by Goodyear police in Queen Creek.

Brian Garduno, 30, of Goodyear, and Megan Elizabeth Revier, 27, of Show Low, were booked into jail on felony warrants stemming from investigations that were conducted before Friday's incident near Ellsworth Loop and Ocotillo Road.

According to Goodyear police, the two are tied to 41 cases of theft and shoplifting throughout the Valley, resulting in over $25,000 in losses. The two also allegedly shoplifted from TJ Maxx near Pebble Creek Parkway and McDowell Road on Dec. 11, 2019 before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

Officer involved-shooting in Queen Creek

Around 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call for emergency assistance at the Queen Creek Marketplace to help officers from the Goodyear Police Department. Goodyear detectives were in the area as they had located the suspect vehicle in the East Valley and began an operation to arrest the suspects.

Goodyear police said their Neighborhood Enforcement Team followed the vehicle to the TJ Maxx at Queen Creek Marketplace, where they observed one of the suspects enter the store and commit another theft. Goodyear detectives then attempted to take the two suspects into custody.

However, when they tried to arrest the suspects, Mr. Garduno allegedly used the vehicle he was driving to ram unmarked police vehicles as he tried to escape.

MCSO said Goodyear detectives that were placed in immediate danger by Mr. Garduno’s actions responded by shooting through the front windshield of Mr. Garduno's vehicle, striking him multiple times.

No officers were injured.

Afterwards, authorities removed Mr. Garduno from the vehicle and rendered first-aid.

MCSO said Ms. Revier was also in the vehicle. She exited the front passenger side of the vehicle and was taken into custody.

Both were transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. They were then booked on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Goodyear police is charging Mr. Garduno with organized retail theft, unlawful flight, theft, and DUI. Ms. Revier faces a theft charge.

Suspects tied to 41 cases across Maricopa County

Those charges stem from the Dec. 11 incident in Goodyear, when police responded to a shoplifting call at the city's TJ Maxx. According to court documents, Mr. Garduno and Ms. Revier allegedly stole over $970 worth of items. Police attempted a pursuit, but the suspects fled in a vehicle, including running several red lights.

Goodyear police learned the identities of the suspects through Mesa and Chandler police, who reportedly have had multiple contacts with the suspects for prior offenses. The vehicle they fled in was also reported stolen on Dec. 3 out of Phoenix.

According to records, the two are tied to 41 cases throughout Maricopa County between August and November 2019. The cases have been investigated by agencies out of Phoenix, Goodyear, Chandler, Mesa, Surprise, Peoria, Glendale, Avondale and MCSO.

Investigation continues and court dates

MCSO is investigating the officer-involved shooting and has not yet submitted charges on this case.

Goodyear's main police station is about a 56-mile drive northwest from where the shooting occurred.

The incident was the third officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County in 2020.

Ms. Revier was jailed on a $15,000 cash-only bond with court dates Jan. 31 and Feb. 4. However, she could face additional charges in connection with the investigation into organized retail theft.

Mr. Garduno was jailed without bond due to being on felony release. He is due in court Jan. 30 and 31, and Feb. 4.
