Gilbert Public Schools holding series of Kindergarten Readiness events

Gilbert Public Schools is kicking off districtwide events March 27 to help current and prospective families with kinder-aged children navigate their options and understand what kindergarten readiness means.

Families will be given access to district and community resources, tools to use at home, and the opportunity to learn more about the district’s 26 elementary school campuses and their academic offerings.

“Kindergarten readiness is not about learning everything they need to know in kindergarten,” said Julie Stockton, who oversees several programs for the district including Kindergarten Prep. “It’s about being ready to learn.”

Events for students and families will include, but not be limited to:

Kindergarten Readiness Fair — The Kindergarten Readiness Fair on March 27 will be held from 4-7 p.m. at Highland High School, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert. The event features expert speakers and a Q&A panel, covering topics such as the changes children go through while transitioning to kindergarten and ways to support readiness at home. Families will also have the opportunity to interact with the district’s 26 elementary school principals in one location and learn more about the unique programs offered on their campuses.

Pave the Path — Children currently enrolled in a GPS preschool program at our elementary schools will participate in the “Pave the Path” experience the week of March 27-31, allowing them a chance to spend time in a kindergarten classroom interacting with kindergarten students and teachers.

Kindergarten Readiness (parent-only event) — Parents of soon-to-be kindergartners can attend this GPS Parent University course on April 12 from 6-8 p.m. at the district’s Community Education building, 6839 E. Guadalupe Road, Mesa. Parents will be taught some engaging, hands-on learning activities that they can replicate at home to help their children become successful members of a classroom community.

PreK - All the Way! — This summer program supports families whose children are entering kindergarten and have never attended preschool. Children will follow a preschool routine, doing activities that support learning and the development of fine-motor skills. Registration opens in the spring.

All GPS elementary schools are enrolling for the 2023-24 school year. Those families who would like to schedule a school tour or enroll today can visit www.gilbertschools.net/ourschools/.
