Posted

Eugene Francis Voelzow, age 90, passed away peacefully in his home on September 9, 2022 in Bend, Oregon.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Gene graduated from the University of Ohio and was drafted into the Armed Forces shortly thereafter. During his distinguished 22 year career in the Army he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served 2 tours in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. After the war, he was transferred to Tucson, Arizona. Upon discharge from the military, he taught ROTC in Old Main at the University of Arizona. After his teaching tenure, Gene owned two successful wine and cheese businesses; one of which, The Rum Runner, continues to this day. As part of his retirement, Gene worked for 10 years all over the country as a National Park Ranger. He enjoyed reading, had a passion for history, and loved traveling the world. Gene was a well-versed scholar who could talk in depth about many subjects. Eventually, Gene moved to Sun City West, Arizona, where he lived for over 20 years playing golf, woodworking, reading non-fiction books, and enjoying time with his partner, Penny Duncan, and his family.
Gene is survived by his brother Norman Voelzow, daughter Katherine Novosel, son John Voelzow, son Jay Martinez, daughter Amber Spangenberg, and 8 grandchildren. He will be truly missed.
Services, which have not been scheduled yet, will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
